Beautiful nature sounds from ‘The Land of the Long White Cloud’<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

In the southern hemisphere\u2019s summer of 1995\/96\u00a0and spring of \u201997, musician and sound engineer Clive\u00a0Williamson visited New Zealand to record the country\u2019s\u00a0beautiful nature sounds. The result was AOTEAROA\u00a0<\/i>\u2013 Nature Sounds of New Zealand<\/i>, an album which\u00a0captured the essence of many of NZ\u2019s amazing natural\u00a0environments. From forests and bush to Pacific shores, via\u00a0waterfalls, caves, streams and extraordinary geothermal\u00a0activity, the album featured relaxing and energising\u00a0\u2018postcards in sound\u2019 from all over the country. Clive\u2019s recording odyssey took him from the Bay of\u00a0Islands in the north to Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula\u00a0in the south to hear New Zealand\u2019s wonderful natural\u00a0atmospheres and the calls of entrancing birds like the T\u016b\u012b,\u00a0Bellbird and Saddleback.<\/p>\n

The New Zealand Tourism Board\u2019s London office were\u00a0so impressed by the quality of the recordings and the\u00a0way AOTEAROA <\/i>evoked\u00a0the natural atmospheres of\u00a0NZ that they sponsored its\u00a0release in the UK. They saw\u00a0the album as a perfect way\u00a0to promote New Zealand as\u00a0a unique holiday destination\u00a0that \u2018refreshes, replenishes and inspires.’<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

The original version of the\u00a0album was released in the\u00a0U.K. in May 1997, with six\u00a0tracks and a playing time of\u00a052 minutes. A special New\u00a0Zealand edition soon followed, which was manufactured in\u00a0NZ and distributed throughout the country by Auckland-based\u00a0ODE Records and Marbeck\u2019s record stores.<\/p>\n

Each track on the album is presented as a sound journey\u00a0through a different region of New Zealand. The bird-rich\u00a0off-shore island sanctuaries of Tiritiri Matangi and Kapiti\u00a0are both featured, as is Rotorua and the Pacific coastline of\u00a0the South Island with its colonies of Little Blue and Yellow\u00a0Eyed penguins. Another \u2018journey\u2019 was recorded in Waitomo\u00a0and King Country in the centre of North Island, where Clive\u00a0was caught in a thunderstorm in Mapara Wildlife Reserve.\u00a0The spectacular rolling thunder is one of the highlights of\u00a0the album, as is the atmospheric sound of water dripping in\u00a0Waitomo\u2019s famous glowworm caves afterwards.<\/p>\n

The album has been used by the BBC, National radio in NZ, and by the Royal New Zealand Ballet for their acclaimed touring production of ‘The Piano’.<\/p>\n

With its superb recording quality and evocative peaceful\u00a0atmospheres, anyone can now soothe away the stresses\u00a0of life and be transported to this wonderful country by\u00a0listening to Aotearoa – Nature Sounds of New Zealand!<\/i><\/p>\n

During his travels with his digital recorder<\/span><\/a>, Clive was particularly impressed by the dedicated ecological work he encountered all over NZ. \u201cMany of the places I visited were doing an amazing job conserving and restoring New Zealand\u2019s fascinating endemic wildlife,\u201d he says, \u201clike Kapiti Island; the Yellow Eyed Penguin Conservation Reserve near Dunedin; and the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony. But the place that seemed to need the most help was Tiritiri Matangi Island<\/span><\/a>, so we are donating a portion of the royalties from this album to them as a contribution to their marvellous work with endangered species of birds such as the k\u014dkako, saddleback, stitchbird and takah\u0113!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
