With a background in sound design and mixing for the BBC in London, Clive Williamson originally founded the group Symbiosis in 1987 to create thought-provoking and atmospheric music and theme tunes for radio and television soundtracks, but soon discovered that much of their ambient work was perfect as a backdrop for holistic therapies. Concentrating on making beautiful music to calm the mind and soothe the spirit, several Symbiosis albums were created specially for relaxation and healing, with Touching the Clouds and Amber & Jade proving particularly successful as an accompaniment to massage, reflexology, yoga and aromatherapy. The group’s music is now widely used in holistic therapy, hospitals, schools, stress management and mindfulness sessions. Research has proved its ability to lower the heartbeat rate and hence reduce stress. Symbiosis also have a melodic and up-tempo side with global influences, which is well represented here, together with some of the beautiful natural sounds and birdsong which Clive recorded in New Zealand for his album New Zealand Naturally.

Clive Williamson, the group’s leader, is aptly summed up in the words of the Todd Rundgren song that he sang superbly: “I was born to synthesize”. Somehow he takes all this diversity and weaves it all together. (John Saxby, reviewing Symbiosis at Rudolph Steiner House.)
